Hamilton, Ontario will host hundreds of barbershop singers from around the province for the annual fall convention of the Ontario District of the Barbershop Harmony Society. More than just a weekend of singing four-part a cappella barbershop harmony, it is a weekend of serious competition for quartets and choruses from across Ontario under the watchful eyes and ears of a panel of judges from across North America. Qualifying choruses from the weekend will advance to the Barbershop Harmony Society International Quartet Competition in Denver, CO in July 2025. A qualifying seniors quartet will advance to the 2025 Midwinter in San Antonio, TX. Top scoring eligible quartets will win their respective Ontario District titles for 2024.

The Sheraton is ideally located beside Jackson Square and the Hamilton Farmer’s market (indoor). Also a part of Jackson Square is the “Nations Fresh Food” grocery store where you will find a huge selection of multi-cultural of food items. Well worth a visit.
*SHERATON HOTEL:*
We understand that some people have been unable to secure hotel space at
the Sheraton in Hamilton as our “block” was sold out. For the District
that is a good news/bad news scenario but for our members it is simply
frustrating.
By way of explanation, we are faced with a new reality. Post Covid we
could pretty much write our own deal with hotels for example we could block
100 rooms at a special rate and if our members only booked 80 of those
rooms the hotels just went with the flow. We always had a cut off date for
the “convention rate” but again, hotels were pretty amenable to extending
that.
With the Sheraton we had to commit to a block of rooms with the proviso
that if they were not booked or otherwise sold, the District would be on
the hook for them. They even went so far as to include an upfront payment
for almost 50% of the total bill.
All that to say that we have to be very cautious is our commitment to
hotels on your behalf.
Should people still need accommodation here are some alternatives:
*Within a few min. walk from the Sheraton:*
– Staybridge Suites – (905)5271001
– Homewood Suites – (905)6671200
*On the Mountain within 5 min. drive from Mohawk College:*
– Courtyard Marriott – (833)-550-1211
*PARKING AT MOHAWK COLLEGE:*
Mohawk charges for parking which is not unusual. Most recent examples are
St Catherines and Brantford where we folks had pay for parking.
If you were to park you car at Mohawk on Friday night and again once or
twice on Saturday it would cost upwards of $20 per car. We have negotiated
a flat rate for the weekend for the District and will be asking attendees
to pay $10 per car for the weekend. This applies to the vehicle (with
license plate #), not the attendee(s). Obviously car pooling would be to
your advantage.
You will be asked at the convention registration table if you parked a
vehicle and at that point pay your $10.
To make this work you must register your car on line as explained below.
For parking, the parking links are live – and can be accessed here:
https://parking.mohawkcollege.ca/permits/?cmd=new_non_auth clicking on the
McIntyre Performing Arts Centre category, and the Barbershop Harmony
Society event links for each day. Guests need to register their vehicle on
the system to get the $0 parking permit, which is not available at the
machines. This can be done the day of, or anytime.
It sounds somewhat convoluted but Harbourtown used this system at their
last holiday show and it seemed to work well.
The contest entry deadline was: 9/18/2024. The ONT Fall 2024 Quartet Session is no longer accepting contest entries.
