Fall 2018: An Exciting Year for Barbershop

The Ontario District’s Fall Convention is just around the corner, and it looks to be a wonderful time to be a barbershopper! With a full roster of quartets (25) and 9 choruses, you won’t want to miss this year’s Fall Convention. Supertonic returns to sing away their championship, and if you were wondering whether they would be holding their Friday Night Hospitality Room again, they will be! The Toronto Northern Lights are hosting the convention, and there are rumours that they will be holding a hospitality room with free beer, so prepare for an amazing afterglow! The groups performing are many, with several novice quartets, some of our favourites returning after some time away from contest, and a second mixed chorus joining the fray with Baldwin Blend

Stirrings of mixed choruses can be heard all around the district, and Baldwin Blend will have the pleasure of competing alongside some new players: Undercover Mix, from London.

The Barrie County Chordsmen are back again! Last year’s most improved chorus, Barrie has been busy having their show on September 29th.

The Forest City Fire has wowed the district with creative and exciting performances, so what will they bring to stage next? From within their ranks come a quartet we know well, senior’s competitors Resolution, and a new quartet called 4 Alarm Fire. They’re bringing the heat so be prepared for an exciting convention!

The Maple Leaf Chord Company represented us at the inaugural senior’s chorus contest this past winter, and they will close out the contest before the mic-cooling Association of Past Ontario Champions chorus takes the stage.

The East York Barbershoppers return to stage, bringing along with them several new quartets: Harmony Hollers (I wonder where they rehearse?), BenchmarkCrafted Measures (both with brothers from TNL), and some Harmony Ranchers (as far as I know) called The Boys of Summer.

P.A.G.E. 4 is back and you can expect they’ll be looking for a spot Saturday night! Along with Hamilton quartets The After PartyReckless Abandon, and Back Deck, as well as several individual members of other quartets, Hamilton has a lot of eager singers this year! Hot off the international chorus contest in Orlando, the Harbourtown Sound join the chorus contest, so come on out and welcome back our international reps.

The Aristocrats made an impression with their first International appearance in Orlando this past July, and now they’re vying for the District championship. They have won the hearts of their subjects with memorable performances and sharp wit, so what will they bring to the stage this time? Will it be enough to win the throne?

Shenanigans returns from Harmony University ready to put their new chops to the test. Did they pay attention in class? Find out at convention! They are joined by their brothers from Newmarket, Evening Tide.

Playback returns to contest this year to give their new tenor a shot at the district championship. Will Mike join the Association of Ontario Champs? They are joined by several Toronto area quartets, including some old hats in a new formation: Pure Miffigan.

Yonge Guns took the year off of contest, completing an album and representing the Toronto Sing! Festival and Canadian barbershop in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. They have had an exciting year, but they’re back in action and doing an evaluation-only performance on Friday night. Be the first to hear them back at it again at convention!

Supertonic’s Super Duper Friday night hospitality room has been a smashing success since they started it and they’re hosting again this year! Join them at convention and see how they sing away their championship year!

Tall Boys return from representing us at the International Senior’s Quartet Contest in Orange County for Midwinter.

All the way from Ottawa, FourTune returns to contest for another shot at the District pins. The Capital City Chorus are bringing a whopping 5 quartets to stage this contest, including Meta and Tour de Four. These gentlemen are coming a long way to convention, so you should too! Trial by Four and Quiet, I’m Sleeping join them to vie for the Novice Trophy. Will they return to our nation’s capital with a pin on their lapels or some hardware? Find out at convention!

Bringing us a blast from the past, Nostalgia Express returns to the stage after several years away from contest. Representing Ontario in the ‘14 Senior’s contest, what will they bring to the stage now?

When asked about his role in the new senior’s quartet Double Double, tenor Bobby Gibson had this to say: “I’m just here to bring the average age up!”

Some familiar faces will take the stage to show a new bass the ropes quartetting: Distant Smash Hit is an Instant Classic cover quartet that enjoys long walks on the beach, hospitality suites, and tags until 3 a.m. Meet a new bass, hear some new music, and sing a tag from an Instant Classic song with these guys
