The Ontario District made an impressive mark at the recently concluded Barbershop Harmony Society International Convention, held in Louisville, Kentucky from July 2nd to July 9th, 2023. The district’s representatives showcased their exceptional talents and garnered well-deserved recognition on the international stage.
Detour, comprising Mike McKim, Kevin Harris, Andrew Carolan, and Steve Armstrong, displayed tremendous skill in their first-ever international appearance. Their performance secured them a commendable 40th place finish among fierce competition from around the world. The quartet’s impressive achievement sets a promising foundation for their future endeavors.
Maple Reserve, consisting of Chris Tanaka-Mann, Greg Mallett, Jonah Lazar, and Reuven Grajner, delivered performances in both the quarter-finals and semi-finals that left the audience in awe. Their flawless harmonies and captivating stage presence earned them a remarkable 11th place finish and the opportunity to serve as mic testers in the Saturday night quartet finals. Their mic testing performance brought the house down and received a standing ovation. Notably, Maple Reserve’s 11th place finish marks the highest placement for an Ontario District quartet since the Nighthawks‘ 8th place finish in 1968.
In the chorus contest, The Harbourtown Sound from Hamilton represented the Ontario District with great pride. Directed by the talented Jordan Travis, the chorus showcased their harmonious unity and outstanding vocal prowess. With 45 members on stage, their performance impressed the judges and secured a commendable 27th place finish among the top-notch competition.
