Ontario District Celebrates Successful Spring Convention in Belleville

The Ontario District of the Barbershop Harmony Society proudly hosted its highly anticipated Spring Convention this past weekend in Belleville, Ontario. The convention was a tremendous success, showcasing the finest barbershop harmony talent in the province. Nineteen quartets and three choruses captivated audiences with their brilliant performances, displaying their incredible vocal abilities and harmonious sound.

The competition was fierce, but ultimately, the Simcoe Gentlemen of Harmony took home the coveted chorus contest trophy, impressing the judges with their impeccable vocals and polished performance. The Liftlock City Aces of Harmony from Peterborough also received well-deserved recognition, winning both the Chorus Encouragement Award and the Most-Improved Chorus Award.

In addition to the chorus competitions, several other awards were presented. The District Novice Quartet award was given to What Song Are We Singing?, while Mix Dup claimed the MBHA Ontario Mixed Quartet title, and Hindsight were crowned the District Seniors Quartet Champions. Detour, the 2022 District Quartet Champions, qualified for the International Quartet Competition in Louisville, KY this summer in their first prelims appearance.

Furthermore, the District recognized several outstanding individuals for their contributions to the barbershop community. John Deacon was presented with the Dilly ‘Sandy’ Bell Award for his exemplary long-term administration and leadership with the Simcoe chapter. Additionally, the District honored Dave Feltrin, Darryl Marchant, John Mallett, and Bobby Gibson—the four members of The Aristocrats—with the prestigious Barbershopper of Renown award. This award recognizes exceptional contributions at the Chapter, District, and International levels and can only be won once in a person’s barbershop career. Despite their numerous contributions over the years, amazingly, none of these talented individuals had won the award before.

Also receiving recognition at the event was Barry Towner who, after an incredible 31 years and over 80 contests in the program, finished his last assignment this weekend and retired as a judge. Society Contest and Judging Chair Steve Armstrong gave a special presentation to Towner, congratulating him on his distinguished judging career.

The Toronto Northern Lights, celebrating their 25th anniversary, staged a reunion chorus that added to the festivities by serving as mic coolers during the chorus contest. Harmony Ranch and Hamilton Harbourtown Sound hosted hospitality rooms on Friday and Saturday nights respectively, where attendees were able to relax, sing, and socialize in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Overall, the Ontario District spring convention was an incredible event, showcasing the best of barbershop harmony in the province. The district is proud to have hosted such a wonderful event, and looks forward to many more successful conventions in the future.
