To Ontario Barbershoppers
By now I am sure that you are all aware of the announcement that the BHS is going to accept everyone of good character, including women, as regular members of the Society starting immediately, June 19, 2018. Chapters will have the opportunity to change their configuration, or to stay exactly as they are, starting in January 2019. This is an extension of the new, bold vision that the BHS launched last year: EVERYBODY IN HARMONY.
No one questions the particular joy of singing and ‘ringing’ within your male or female group. This special sort of social and emotional bond will be preserved within the new Vision. However our chapters will now have the opportunity, if they wish, to add to their configuration by starting a female-only chorus, or perhaps a mixed barbershop chorus in addition to what they are already doing. Not making any changes is also a valid option.
There are many details to be addressed with this proposed change in membership structure. Also, it is clear there are many legal, financial, and cultural issues to resolve. The BHS is committed to developing a series of Chapter Guidance materials over the next few months. There is much more to come as we re-imagine how we want to enjoy our barbershop lives going forward.
The Ontario District will enter into all of the discussions with an open mind. We will advocate very strongly to preserve the honourable history and traditions of barbershop music and singing. We remain committed to supporting all our Ontario District chapters and members. We look forward to the future and will do our best to adapt to the exciting changes that may be before us as we work in service to you, the Ontario Barbershopper.
The District received the same announcement and at the same moment that you did. Thus we all share many of the same questions. There is no doubt that we will all receive more information in the weeks and months ahead.
We welcome your comments, questions, and concerns. Please send them to: membership-changes[at]ontariosings.com.
Thank you for your support and patience.
